The future of fine gem materials
As I have 40 years experience sourcing fine gem stones, I have been seeing an alarming rate of gem materials being virtually unavailable for purchase in the rough state. Huge Chinese and Indian companies gobble up all existing stocks of several materials such as Rutilated Quartz , Tourmaline in Quartz, Malachite, and upper end Rhodocrosite, Picture jasper, Opal and especially Drusy from Brazil. While there are also new governmental restrictions being required in Brazil the independent miner is being squeezed by a more economical mechanized mining .
Expect the trend to continue over the coming decade as Asian Jewelry companies compete for gemstone supply dominance and increased market share. With extremely low labor costs India continues to grab rough materials on every continent.
